Fachpack 2025
From AI to sustainability
Preparations for FACHPACK, the European Trade Fair for Packaging, Technology and Processes, are in full swing. From 23 to 25 September 2025, the packaging industry will once again come together at Fachpack in Nuremberg. The 1,400 or so exhibitors are in the peak phase of their preparations for the trade fair.
In the third year without economic growth in Germany, exhibitors are responding with adapted strategies and are planning their participations flexibly and at shorter notice. Unexpected geopolitical volatility is also presenting companies with the additional task of constantly evaluating and tapping into business potential in different markets. This is also reflected in the presentation of new products and solutions. After all, a product launch only makes sense if it is strategically planned and tailored to the needs of the target group. And in the current economic situation, it is even more important to choose the right time that suits the product type and market conditions.
Flexibility in production - automation + AI
New solutions are primarily focussed on more efficient operation and high process reliability as well as reduced maintenance requirements. However, in order to fulfil the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), the focus is also increasingly on conserving resources and using recyclable and renewable materials. The automation and system solution specialist Multivac is therefore presenting a fully automated traysealer line for the sustainable packaging of ready meals. In addition to the high-performance, compact TraysealerTX 620, this includes a conveyor belt labeller with an AI-based inspection system for product inspection at the infeed and a label and print inspection at the outfeed. Developed for a wide range of applications with fast product changeovers and high cycle output, the TX 620 is characterised by intelligent machine and line control and the highest standards of hygiene. The filled trays are stacked in boxes by a cobot (Multivac Combined Automations). Ready meals are packed in a protective atmosphere in a sustainable cardboard tray, which is reliably sealed with a recyclable, thin film. "Our aim is therefore to automate as many of these processes as possible, with integrated, fully automated lines, but also through the use of artificial intelligence," explains Dietmar Bohlen, Vice President at Multivac Germany. "In order to meet the increasing demand for smaller batch sizes and growing product diversity, we offer machines that can be converted particularly quickly and easily - even by personnel without specialist knowledge." The Weber Group, Breidenbach, also sees itself as a system provider for food products such as sliced and piece goods as well as the automation and packaging of fresh products, with a holistic approach. One of the exhibits at the FACHPACK stand in Hall 1, Stand 1-434 is a complete line from slicer to thermoformer including cross web labeller, which is specially tailored to the needs of food manufacturers with a wide range of products and changing production requirements. Whether fresh meat such as marinated steaks or multi-track calibre products such as cooked sausage and raw sausage - this line provides full-range producers with an economical solution for small batches as well as medium and high output ranges. A key feature of the line is its design for skin packaging, an increasingly popular packaging format that offers both functional and visual benefits. A particular advantage is that the realisation of skin packs on the wePACK 4000 included in the line concept does not require any special configuration of the packaging machine. Customers who also want to produce other types of packaging on the same line not only save on investment costs, but also avoid unnecessary extra technology and therefore additional downtime potential and maintenance costs.

Target group-specific presentation
Bizerba wants to address its various target groups within the packaging industry more precisely with a two-part trade fair presence. While solutions for packaging safety, quality assurance and automated handling will be presented in Hall 3C at Stand 468, the focus at the labelling stand in Hall 3A at Stand 416 will be on added value through intelligent labelling. Among other things, the new LeakSecure inspection system, an inline-capable leak detection system for CO₂ MAP packaging with semi-rigid trays, will be on display. The system detects even the smallest leaks in real time, regardless of CO₂ fluctuations in the environment, and can be seamlessly integrated into existing lines. Visual error displays and real-time feedback support continuous process optimisation. The system is supplemented by a camera-based solution for visual inspection of the sealing seams. It reliably recognises typical defect patterns such as creases, product adhesions or incomplete seals. Both systems help to reliably ensure packaging quality and avoid returns. In line with the PPWR theme of "resource conservation", Bizerba is presenting a sustainable labelling solution without liner. CleanCut linerless labels unmistakably reduce material consumption as well as waste and disposal costs. The basis is a high-quality paper or film material, which is provided with adhesive and silicone strips customised to the packaging. This ensures high label adhesion despite reduced adhesive application. Adhesive-free zones also ensure that the cutting blades remain clean, which has a positive effect on maintenance, hygiene and service life. The CleanCut labels are suitable for a wide range of application scenarios - whether as a wrap-around label (full wrap), multi-page label (C-wrap) or for classic labelling of individual packaging pages.

Packaging solutions - sustainable and flexible
Sappi will be presenting the new Guard Pro OMH and Guard Duo products in Hall 4A / Stand 306. These high-barrier papers are specially tailored to the packaging requirements of food and especially confectionery such as chocolate. The Guard Pro products with Guard Pro OHS, Guard Pro OHG, AvantGuard and the upcoming product Guard Pro OMH are designated high barrier papers. They offer protection against oxygen, water vapour, grease and MOSH/MOAH with or without heat sealability. The Guard Pro OHS high barrier paper is available in Gloss and Natural versions. This presentation follows last year's launch and marks the full market availability of the recyclable paper. Sappi will also introduce the new Guard Pro OMH high barrier paper at the show. All of these high barrier papers are designed for products that require the highest barrier properties, such as chocolate products of all kinds, coffee powder additives, tea, spices, soluble beverages, cheese, etc. "Our portfolio of functional papers for flexible packaging represents the future of sustainable packaging," explains Filip van Ranst, Sales Director Flexible Packaging at Sappi Europe.
